About Italia Grape.
The Italia grape is considered one of the eight pisco grapes, that is, one of the only ones that are authorized to make pisco. In Peru, there are eight types of pisco grapes and they are classified into two categories: aromatic and non-aromatic. The non-aromatic strains are the following: Quebranta, Negra Criolla, Mollar and Uvina, which are characterized by the strength and presence of their flavor. The Italia grape is found in the category of aromatic grapes along with Moscatel, Albilla and Torontel. As their name suggests, these four strains are easy to recognize by their intense aromas.
The first Italy variety vines arrived in Peru from the Canary Islands in Spain. In those years in the Canary Islands the plantations of this strain were at their peak, they were the delight of the population.
It is one of the few grapes in the world that is used both to produce wines and piscos, as well as to eat as fruit. “Only in the 18th century did it begin to be used for pisco brandy.”
It is known that its true origin is Greek. Despite being called Italia in Peru - perhaps because it was the Italians who diversified it the most - the official name of this strain is Moscatel de Alejandría - that is how it is known worldwide - and it is assumed that it comes from the city of Alexandria, Egypt.
Type of grape Italy
Thanks to research, it is known that there are three types of Italian grapes: The golden one or Muscat of Alexandria, the pink one or Muscat Rosado and the black one or Muscat of Hamburg.
