Cactus is a typical landscape in Mexico. Nopalitos are cactus leaves when cut from the plant and cooked. The use of cactus leaves has its origins in Roman Catholic customs. Meat is avoided during Lent, so cactus leaves were regularly on the table. In Mexico, they are often consumed as a vegetable. The best young leaves are fresh packed, pickled or preserved, often cut into strips. Traditional dishes are e.g. Cactus salad or cactus soup. Tastes great with seafood, omelettes, quiche, stews and gives your dishes an authentic touch! Juicy alternative for vegetarians.
